Biosens

Science that turns care into reality.

About Biosens

Biosens is a Brazilian deeptech life-sciences company. We develop integrated point-of-care testing technologies, bringing together science, engineering and software to make test results available where care happens.

We believe science has value when it can be turned into useful technology, developed with rigor and applied responsibly.

Our direction

MissionWe develop integrated point-of-care testing technologies that bring together sensors, reagents, devices and software to make test results available where care happens and support healthcare decisions.

VisionA future where science transforms how we care.

From research to technology

Biosens grew out of research and development work at Unisinos. Incorporated on 12 May 2020 at the Tecnosinos technology park in São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, the company was founded to turn scientific knowledge into technology solutions for health care.

Our academic roots still shape the way we work: we investigate, develop and assess technologies that have to work as integrated systems, respecting their purpose and their conditions of use.

An integrated testing system

A point-of-care test is not just a strip or a device. How it works depends on the interaction between the sample, the detection chemistry, the sensors, the electronics, the signal processing and the way the result is presented.

That is why we develop the diagnostic system as a whole.

  • Strips, reagents and sensors

Components that interact with the sample and produce the signal used in the measurement.

  • bSens One

The reader receives the strip, carries out the measurement and shows the test result.

  • Software and data

Processing links the measurement to the way the result is presented. bSens Cloud, in development, is designed to organize a history of results over time.

This approach lets us consider, from the start of development, how analytical performance, user experience, technology integration and manufacturing relate to one another.

Each product has its own stage of development. We state these stages explicitly, distinguishing solutions in development, research applications and products being prepared for registration.

Why it matters

Access to diagnostic testing is an important step in care, but it remains unequal in many settings.

In its 2021 report, the Lancet Commission on diagnostics identified significant gaps in access to and use of tests. Across the six reference conditions it analyzed, it estimated that 35% to 62% of people with these conditions remained undiagnosed. In low-income and lower-middle-income countries, about 19% of the population had access to the simplest diagnostic tests in primary care, excluding tests for HIV and malaria.[1]

These figures describe challenges in health systems, not the performance of Biosens products.

They underline the importance of developing diagnostic technologies with attention not only to the measurement method, but also to cost, use, availability and the setting in which results will be used.

Our goal is to help make results available where care happens, supporting the work of health professionals and the journey of the people they care for.

How we work

Biosens's six values guide our choices and the way we develop technology.

  • Be Scientific

We investigate with curiosity, method and rigor. We test hypotheses, analyze evidence and learn from the results.

  • Be Fearless

We explore new possibilities, experiment responsibly and treat mistakes as a source of learning.

  • Be Trustworthy

We communicate what we know, distinguish evidence from hypotheses and acknowledge the limits of what we can claim.

  • Be Collaborative

We combine different disciplines, share knowledge and take joint responsibility for the results of our work.

  • Be Committed

We value people, support continuous development and keep the commitments we make.

  • Be Excellent

We pursue quality, efficiency and continuous improvement, with individual, social and environmental responsibility.

These values are not just statements of intent. They should guide concrete choices, especially when speed, cost, quality, evidence and user experience pull in different directions.

Meet the founders

Biosens brings together complementary backgrounds in science, engineering, innovation and business development. This combination links research to building a deeptech company dedicated to health.

Willyan Hasenkamp

Co-founder

An entrepreneur, electrical engineer, researcher and professor, Willyan has advanced training in Materials Science, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, and a doctorate in Biotechnology and Bioengineering. Willyan's work spans materials, semiconductors, bioelectronics, micro- and nanotechnology and the development of systems for health applications.

Susana Maria Kakuta

Co-founder

An entrepreneur with a doctorate in Management and Business, Susana has a background in innovation management, business development and leading innovation environments. Susana's experience helps connect research, strategy, entrepreneurship and the development of technology-based businesses.

At Biosens, these perspectives come together in the search for solutions that combine scientific rigor, technological capability and practical application.

Science with responsibility

A test result is not, on its own, a diagnosis. The measurement has to suit the purpose of the test, and the way it is presented has to respect the characteristics and limits of the method.

That is why we distinguish measured results, scientific evidence, hypotheses under investigation and development plans. We state the stage of each product and submit performance claims to the applicable scientific and regulatory review before they are published.

In the case of bSens.INR, the device shows the measured INR value. Its interpretation depends on each person's clinical context and is a matter for the health professional.

We believe trust is built through method, transparency and responsibility.
